Intercultural coaching

Intercultural coaching can apply to all fields of coaching: life-, career-, or relationship coaching.
The only difference is that additional attention will go to your cultural background and how this affects your coaching issue/question.

Everybody is different. Your unique personality was shaped by many factors, including cultural context as a key component. Culture plays a role on different levels in shaping our personalities via religion, language, country of origin, region of origin, race, social class, and/or gender, etc.

Moving to another country may be an adventure with many opportunities for growth. However, it also provides many challenges that might give additional stress.

This can be illustrated with the following examples:

  • Different perspective on time and timelines
  • Differences in importance of family life
  • Different eating and drinking habits (time, type, etc)
  • Different religious backgrounds (including potential family pressure)
  • Political backgrounds of your country of origin, affecting views on life
  • The way that Male-Female roles are perceived
  • Differences in language and communication styles, including daily things such as culturally determined humor

The acclimatization to a new system, habits, language, climate, lack of having your own family and old friends around, etc. is not an easy challenge, even when it provides for adventure and many growth opportunities.

In an intercultural relationship the different cultural backgrounds can present some serious challenges. Moreover, you might temporarily be more dependent on your new partner for several things as he/she knows how to get things done and already has a network of friends available. Before the move, you might have been very independent but now you feel forced to ask your partner for help, more than you would usually. This may feel unnatural and possibly puts additional stress on your relationship.

Being in an international relationship myself, I have encountered many of the above mentioned stressors, first hand or through my partner. Also, I have extensive experience in working with people with diverse cultural backgrounds. These experiences, in combination with my coaching skills, give me the right tools to help you deal with cultural differences and adjustment difficulties.
